Beaver Creek Lodge Names Greg Barnhill Executive Chef of Rocks Modern Grill

BEAVER CREEK, CO - (March 13, 2008) The AAA Four-Diamond all-suite Beaver Creek Lodge has appointed Greg Barnhill Executive Chef for its popular restaurant Rocks Modern Grill, and plans to completely redesign the menus at the restaurant to highlight the new chef’s unique influences.

Barnhill brings a distinguished culinary track record and vast experience to the 72-room Beaver Creek Lodge and Rocks Modern Grill.  A Colorado native, Barnhill was born into the restaurant business and developed his culinary interest at a very early age.  As a young teen he would spend summers with his sister (renowned pastry chef Deborah Mitterhauser) and brother-in-law (Klaus Mitterhauser) at their collection of famous Minneapolis restaurants - The 510 Groveland, La Tortue, Mitterhauser La Cuisine and The Anchorage.  After a three-year apprenticeship at these restaurants, Barnhill returned to Colorado to work under Hans Wyppler at the fabled Black Bear Inn in Lyons and completed his culinary training under Chef Peter Egli at Campari’s.  It was this round of intensive European-style training which prepared Barnhill, at age 24, to become part owner and chef of the award-winning Wine Cellar Restaurant in Ft. Collins.

Early in the 1990’s Barnhill moved to Florida as a part of the opening team for many of the restaurants in the Universal Studios Theme Park including Hard Rock Café and Park Plaza Gardens.  From there, he opened the California Café in the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale.  It was here that Barnhill was named the inventor of “Califlorida Cuisine”.  While at the California Café, he also worked with British Airways to upgrade their meal service and also with the NFL during the 1994 Superbowl.

1996 brought Barnhill back to Colorado to open the California Café in Denver.  After eight years at California Café, Barnhill moved on to run the kitchens of Three Tomatoes Catering in Denver where he was responsible for the culinary operations of Mile High Stadium, the Denver Botaninc Gardens, the Sprint International Golf Tournament at Castle Pines and many other events serving up to 5,000 guests at a time.  Barnhill then helped to open Zoka’s, a new restaurant in the small mountain village of Pine Colorado, which received many favorable reviews and has achieved a very loyal following.

“We are thrilled to have Chef Barnhill and his solid culinary background here at Beaver Creek Lodge, says Simon Chen, general manager of the luxury hotel. His creative and innovative approach will ensure a memorable dining experience for our guests."

Located in the heart of Beaver Creek Village, Rocks Modern Grill is a local favorite offering beautiful indoor and outdoor seating.  This spring, the restaurant will boast an exciting new menu to showcase Barnhill’s talents and will add a Sunday Brunch by summer.  Rocks on the Run, a deli market, features sandwiches, pastries, juice and coffee to go. Rocks Modern Grill is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Hours of operation are: 7:00 – 10:30am and 11:00am – 10:00pm.

The Kessler Wine Room is the perfect venue for celebrating special occasions and events in a private setting and can accommodate groups up to 14. Located directly off of Rocks Modern Grill, the Kessler Wine Room boasts a view looking directly out over Vail Valley.
